Tenkara Fly Fishing: Insights & Strategies

Tenkara is the art of fly fishing developed in Japan hundreds of years ago.  Until about 2009, it didn’t have much of a presence in the United States. Thanks to the efforts of early adapters like Daniel Galhardo (www.tenkarausa.com) and other dedicated tenkara anglers, tenkara is one of the fastest growing styles of fly fishing for trout.  That said, there are still many Western-style fly anglers who still don’t know, hadn’t heard of or have yet to try their hand using tenkara methods.  Having experienced tenkara for myself over the last 10 years, it’s hard for me to imagine other anglers missing out on an opportunity to add another dimension to their fishing pleasure.

Searching around, I did find a small cadre of anglers who had discovered tenkara and were already deeply dedicated to advancing their tenkara craft. More importantly, these guys were catching trout and lots of them in waters all around the United States.

How could something this good be known to so few? We had to find ways to get the word out on tenkara as a method of fly-fishing here in the States. It seemed to me that the best way to do that was to find some of the best tenkara anglers in the U.S. and work with them to share their insights, strategies and tactics for tenkara. That’s just what I did in producing this book.

You the reader have the opportunity to consider a wider range of views on tenkara, from the purist tenkara angler to what I call the “adaptive tenkara angler.” There’s room for everyone in the tenkara world. You can discern what appeals to you as you work your way through each chapter.

I think you’ll also enjoy the wit and often-sharp opinions that our group of tenkara anglers has openly shared with you. I know I have as I’ve worked through their interviews and constructed the manuscript for this book project.

Spin Fishing For Trout

Catch More Trout!

This book is not a basic 101 course on spin fishing for trout. There are already plenty of excellent basic “how-to” books to help you master the basics of using spin fishing equipment.

Spin Fishing for Trout is a compilation of strategies and tactics pulled from formal and informal discussions with professional guides and trout spinning experts from across the country. Each year, millions of anglers spend time plying their local waters and trout waters from other destinations. Since it was introduced in the mid-20th century, spin fishing has become a national favorite for catching all kinds of fish in both freshwater and saltwater.

In addition to what I have contributed to this book based on my collective spin fishing experience of over 35 years, you have the perspectives of different anglers who come to the sport from entirely different sets of angling histories. No one angler attacks a fishing challenge exactly the same as another.

Every angler has learned based on the depth and width of their angling experiences. In all, the anglers who have helped me craft this book bring a collective experience base of more than 200 years to angling for you to review and select what works.
